Braveheart

Braveheart (1995), Mel Gibson's Academy Award-winning epic about William Wallace, used Glen Coe's landscape for several key sequences. The dramatic scenery of the glen — towering peaks, misty valleys, windswept moorland — perfectly captured the wild beauty of medieval Scotland.

Glen Coe appears in the establishing shots of Wallace's Highland Scotland and during sequences depicting his retreat to the mountains. The film's portrayal of the Highlands — raw, beautiful, and unforgiving — owes much to this specific landscape.

Historical accuracy is another matter (Wallace was a Lowlander, and much of the film was shot in Ireland), but the Glen Coe sequences are among the most visually stunning in the film.

The film put the Scottish Highlands on the global tourist map and created a wave of "Braveheart tourism" that continues to this day. Standing in Glen Coe, it's easy to understand why — the landscape is inherently cinematic.
