Aonach Eagach Ridge

10 km
Distance
980m
Elevation
7-10 hours
Duration

The Aonach Eagach is mainland Britain's narrowest ridge, a spectacular and exposed scramble along the northern wall of Glen Coe. This is not a walk — it's a serious Grade 2 scramble with genuine exposure, irreversible sections, and real consequences if you get it wrong.

The ridge connects two Munros — Meall Dearg (953m) and Sgorr nam Fiannaidh (967m) — via a series of pinnacles, notches, and knife-edge arêtes. The most famous section, the "crazy pinnacles," involves delicate moves on exposed rock with vertiginous drops on both sides.

Once committed to the ridge, there is no easy escape. You must continue to the end. This makes weather assessment crucial — being caught in cloud, rain, or wind on the exposed sections turns a thrilling scramble into a survival situation.

For experienced scramblers in good conditions, it's one of the finest days out in the Scottish Highlands. The exposure, the positions, the views — nothing else in Britain quite compares.
