Devil's Staircase
8 km
Distance
300m
Elevation
3-4 hours
Duration
The Devil's Staircase is the highest point on the West Highland Way, a zigzagging path that climbs from the floor of Glen Coe up and over to Kinlochleven. Originally a military road built in the 18th century, it earned its devilish name from the soldiers who built it.
The ascent from the Kings House Hotel side is a steady, well-constructed zigzag that gains height surprisingly quickly. At the top (548m), the reward is a stunning view back to Buachaille Etive Mòr and across the vast emptiness of Rannoch Moor.
Most walkers continue the descent to Kinlochleven, making this a point-to-point walk (arrange transport or walk back). The descent is long but gradual, with views opening up to Loch Leven and the Mamores.
